This Friday, February 28th, there’s a call for a one-day economic boycott aimed directly at mega-corporations. And personally, why stop at one day? Is there really anything that you absolutely NEED from Target, Walmart or Amazon?
This is lazy sustainability at its finest, and I mean this in the best way. It’s like participating in No Mow May. You have to put more work into doing the bad thing than the good thing.
So much of the stuff we buy - we do NOT need. We don’t even want it. All of those Amazon and TikTok Shop videos are an embodiment of finding solutions for problems you don’t have.
Yes, shopping at small and ethical businesses is usually a little more expensive, but hopefully because you’re buying less, you’ll still have a net positive savings.
So ask yourself:
Is there a small business you can shop at instead?
Is there something you can borrow?
Is it something you can make?
Is it something you can thrift?
Now, I know I’m preaching to the choir. Most people on this email list already fall heavily under the ‘buy less’ mentality so this is more of a call-in for our friends and family members that always seem to have packages arriving at the doorsteps every or every other day. This is your sign to have conversations with them.
So how can we shift our everyday habits to support local, independent businesses?
